Whats Good True 2 Lifers?!

Last night we performed in front of an electric crowd of about 3000 at Rutgers University to open up for Lupe Fiasco. Jerz was in the building and as you can guess we’ll say…the show was dope.

But for real tho…the show was dope. Like our last show at Loyola and Towson the crowd was live and we WENT IN. We were feeling good from taking the stage soaring through performing our latest single to close out the set. Then Lu took the stage and ROCKED OUT. His show set gets better and better every performance and its a dope benchmark for any performer out. Word. Lu did a back flip at the end of his set. Seriously. And for real…True 2 Life is heading to that point where we can offer others the same opportunity to open and become that level of inspiration.

Thanks to everyone that came out and thank you Rutgers for having a good time with us. We had mad fun.

If you were there, send performance reviews to jeezy44@gmail.com for lupefiasco-lupend.blogspot.com

And let us know what you thought as well (true2lifemusic@gmail.com)

Our intro music is on. We’re back stage stretching out, sipping water, getting our minds right. Many times there’s butterflies in the stomach…still. Not out of nervousness, but out of anxiety… cause we know when we walk onto the stage and I start spittin’ “I put trust in my pen….” [the opening words from our opening song "The Struggle & The Dream"] .. with Concise & Slang on either side… the reaction is going to be crazy. The show has begun.

A smile comes to my face when I see people say “Wait til my face starts Poppin’ on TV“. Or when they react to certain punchlines/flow patterns. That’s dope. It’s very gratifying as an artist to see all the work you put into your craft and your grind resulting in satisfied fans. It drives me to see that we could take a stage in front of thousands of people who don’t know us from Adam, and end up making so many fans, friends, supporters… all off the strength of our music, our passion, our energy… it’s what we do. There’s nothing like it. The feeling ranks up there with sex, roscoe’s chicken & waffles, and hitting a fade away three pointer at the buzzer to win the game. Swish.

Obviously, Lupe Fiasco is on the road to being a hip-hop MEGA star… his name is drawing more and more people and his live show is definitely worth it. So many may think we’re lucky to be able to open for Lupe at so many shows… or T-Pain or The Dream or any other major artist we’re opening for. I guess we’re lucky… kinda. But I believe it is moreso our grind, our talent, and our passion that puts us on stage in front of thousands of people, sans record deal, sans major radio rotation, sans major industry cosign. I would say we’re lucky that god has blessed us with the talent and that our parents instilled principles of hard work into us. Thank you moms. Thank you dads. And for all the love you gave…Thank you Loyola.

Soon, lord willing, up and coming artists will be feeling the same way to be able to open for US.

True 2 Life Music is on the rise…Catch us at a city near you.

Best Regards,

Mr. Mr. Words

ps: We’ll also be opening up for Lupe Fiasco @ Rutgers University this Saturday, Oct. 18th

Freedom

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

I seen this quote on one of those ads on the train the other day:

The only freedom deserving the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental and spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest.

At first I looked at briefly but then looked again and pulled out the celly to start copying it down. I was typing dumb fast but my stop to get off the train came up and I only got a section of the quote. Luckily for google I was able to figure out the rest (and didn’t have to re-type it either, thanks to copy / paste)

I realized I was feeling it for a several reasons. It kind of speaks to what we are doing with our music and the whole “True 2 Life” movement. We have the freedom to do what we want and how we want it. Whether that be through the expression in our music or the direction we take our business. Most people can understand and appreciate what were doing but some people can’t. Some people, whether they’re friends or strangers don’t understand why a group of young driven college educated people would want to “rap.” They don’t see it’s bigger than their pre-conceived prejudice of the genre.

It’s also motivational for anyone who would rather not be told what they should or shouldn’t be doing. With entertainment and hip hop, some do it for a hobby and some for a voyeuristic obsession with rap culture (which is kind of lame but that’s their choice. probably won’t make it far tho). Some do it for girls, some do it for attention. Some do it for a hustle, so do it for respect. Some do it in vain, so it for the love of the game. Whatever you do it for, at least you have the freedom to DO YOU. It goes for anything, not just music. I would rather see someone do something they want rather than see someone miserable doing something they don’t. That person doing what they want to do has more potential even if the miserable person is good at what they can’t stand doing. People, society, whomever or whatever, may not know what’s best for you but can pressure you do to something thats not. That’s not free.

As for us we live and breath hip hop (and we do it well). Figuratively speaking, True 2 Life has stepped outside that box that some people would rather see us neatly placed in. We probably even stepped out that box literally too, the cubicle at some fortune 500.

We’re breaking the mold. Everything from the go-getter do-it-yourself mentality to image and content. Just check the spirit of the rhymes, you’ll see it’s FREE. Yet…we’re not the first nor the last to do it but we respect the culture and the influence it has on the world and we are going to take it as far as we can. Because we have the freedom to do so.

FREE! holla at ya boy. we got them thangs when we land…early. and yo im not the blogging type nor an english major, so don’t come at me with the grammar mistakes.

True 2 Life Music is Performing with Slim of 112 - Round 2

Friday, September 12th, 2008

So…we tried to pull the CT double last night…yeah, about that. Didn’t work. I remember in track I used to try pulling off the meet double. Either by winning the 200/400 combo or 100/200 combo. It’s pretty hard sometimes but very much possible. The CT double is a little different. We were booked for 2 different shows in 2 different cities, 40 minutes apart from each other - New Haven, CT to Hartford, CT. According to our plans, we had about an hour and a half in between performance sets, so if everything was on point it shouldn’t have been hard to do both. We even budgeted some intangibles like parking and traffic into our stage-to-stage timing. We set off our R-Bar performance first. It was Hot 93.7’s “We Got Next” College Fest, so alot of the good peoples over at Hot 93.7 were there.

We were chopping it up for a little bit before we had to go on. But like any and pretty much every other show, things run late. We ended up rocking out anyways and we did our thing thing. We performed “Poppin’ On TV” and our next single “Don’t Worry.” We hand over the mics to DJ Craig G and hit the road. Of course there’s traffic, traffic stops, parking issues, etc…but we did an excellent job of making up for time. We actually ended up getting to Hartford around the time we planned. But long story short, Slim ends up rocking out a little early and we miss our performance slot.

Sucks right?! Not really. The owner and promoter of Club NV express to us that they feel bad about the mishap and since Slim is coming back tomorrow night (Friday, as in TONIGHT) they want us to open up “again.” So tonight, 9.12.08, we’ll be performing with Slim of 112, same place, same time. Club NV, downtown Hartford, CT. We’ll be there around 11 and we’ll be rocking out harder than ever. So if you missed the show, come get it Poppin with us. HOLLA!

Shouts to Jenny Boom Boom, Craig G, Joey Franchise and everyone else that held us down last night. That love is much appreciated and will always be reciprocated.

TRUE 2 LIFE MUSIC’s in the building. And we’re not stopping there.

Loss (Rest in Peace)

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Without going into too much detail, one of the True 2 Life members lost someone extremely close to them Wednesday morning. This is potentially some of the worse news to hear the morning after a performance. We all want to extend our condolences. Although we don’t know exactly how it feels to go through this, unless we can step in that persons body or experience a similar loss, it still hurts nonetheless. When one experiences a loss we all do. That’s how team operates. Since were all like family its like losing a part of us. All in all, Rest In Peace and we pray for his strength to get through this. These type of events remind us to put things in perspective - keep your family close and never forget loved ones come first because tomorrow is never promised. Stay True (2 Life 4 Life.)

KING

MLK

In remembrance of the day Martin Luther King Jr, was assassinated, I wanted to share with you true 2 lifers an exerpt from the life and times of MLK. For me, MLK’s persistence to his cause in the face of adversity alone is motivation. Not to mention the overwhelming power of his words and his vision. Anyone in the universe should be able to draw inspiration from the KING.

Here is the exerpt, a quick read from a chapter of MLK’s autobiography. He talks about being stabbed in the chest and not letting that type of violence distract his movement.

Follow your dreams.
